Executive Summary
During a recent meeting with TAFB/EM, the use of “Oil Solutions Powder”TM Powder for spill remediation on water was discussed. The AF is ever investigating new products to reduce the environmental impact of spills on Government property. The “Oil Solutions Powder” discussion led to questions regarding the products ability to reduce Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) by the removal/remediation of various spilled contaminants, and any COD contribution of the product itself. These questions were resolved by use of a static simulation test to quantify the COD contributions. The conclusions from the static tests prove “Oil Solutions Powder” is not a COD contributor and that it is extremely effective in removing hydrocarbon contaminants from the surface of water leaving the water in a very low COD, pristine condition.
“Oil Solutions Powder” has been found to be an exceptional product for the recovery/remediation
of hydrocarbons from the surface of water leaving the water with very low COD. Water with JP-
8 fuel had an average residual COD level of 21 mg/l. The 7808 jet engine oil tests consistently averaged < 20 mg/l after product use. Government requirements are that any product to be used on the on TAFB must meet a limit of 120 mg/l COD.
This report presents findings of static COD tests designed to identify the effectiveness and any contribution to COD on a body of water using “Oil Solutions Powder”. That contribution was found to be 5 mg/l. The potential COD contribution of hydrocarbon contaminants was removed by application of the “Oil Solutions Powder” to capture and remove the contaminant from the water surface.
In summary, this report concludes that the “Oil Solutions Powder” technology is far more effective that current products used in the same environment and supports an environmentally friendly and safe alternative for remediation/disposal of hydrocarbons on the surface of water.
